Eastern Cape
The landscape of the Eastern Cape is beautiful and diverse, from the arid and desolate Karoo Desert to the lush green wild coast and fertile Lankloof and Sundays River Valleys.
The game reserves, both public and private, offer a wealth of wildlife viewing including the rare mountain zebra, hundreds of elephants, black rhino, buffalo, eland, warthog and, uncommonly, the dung beetle.
There are various hiking trails throughout the valleys and the seaside cliffs with stunning views of the coastine.
The cities and towns, known for their friendliness, are ideal for travellers and have plenty of beaches, restaurants and summer entertainment.
One highlight of this area is the rural beauty of the Transkei on the Wild Coast. Poplular destinations for budget travellers include Coffee Bay, Mpande and Port St John's.
