Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is situated in central southern Africa, landlocked by Mozambique to the north and east, South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest and Zambia to the northwest and north. It lies between the Zambezi River in the north and the Limpopo River in the south.
Most of Zimbabwe is rolling plateau, with over 75% of it lying between 610m (2000 ft) and 1,525m (5,000 ft) above sea level, and almost all of it over 305m (1,000 ft).
The area of high plateau (high veld) is 400 miles long and 50 miles wide, stretching from the northeast to the southwest.
A Word of Caution
The political and social situation in Zimbabwe is currently rather unsettled, so travellers should take care. You will still find a warm and hospitable welcome from ordinary Zimbabweans, and lodges do still operate in places of special interest such as Victoria Falls.
Travel within Zimbabwe might be time-consuming and tedious, due to shortages of petrol and diesel. |
Zimbabwe provides the Africa that travellers want to see - exotic scenery, interesting cultures and game parks full of animals. The highlights include Great Zimbabwe, the most extensive ruins in sub-Saharan Africa, the thundering Victoria Falls and the dramatic eastern mountain peaks on the border with Mozambique. Zimbabwe is a land of striking beauty on a grand scale.
