Swaziland

Nestled in between South Africa and Mozambique, the small kingdom of Swaziland may be the smallest country in Africa, but it is alive with culture, friendly people, simple picturesque thatched villages and colourful crafts. It is also extremely laid back. The country became independent in 1968, and is one of only three in Africa with a reigning monarch. His Majesty King Mswati III believes in retaining and celebrating his country's traditions and is committed to safeguarding Swaziland's culture and natural heritage. Visitors will appreciate the warm welcome from their friendly hosts.

Swaziland has beautiful landscapes including mountains, lush forests, fertile valleys and classic African lowveld. The vast tree plantations contrast dramatically with the small-scale farming which provides many with a subsistence living.

The Royal Ezulwini Valley is where most monuments, museums, crafts and culture are to be found, and also many of the hotels and guest houses. It is here that King Mswati III lives with his wives, and where he chooses another at the annual Reed Dance.

There is plenty of game to be seen in the National Reserves. Hiking, Biking and other outdoor adventures are widely available. However, there is only one museum and the nightlife is limited. Swaziland is renowned for its casinos, which in the past were frequented by South Africans, who now have their own entertainment resorts. Some of the more important festivals turn the Ezulwini ('Heaven') Valley into a brilliant spectacle of dancing and singing, as tribespeople dressed in flamboyant costumes reaffirm their belief in their monarchy and their culture.

The two most important Swazi cultural ceremonies are in August or September for the Umhlanga (Reed) Dance, and in late December or early January for the Incwala (the 'First Fruits') ceremony.
