Botswana
Botswana was formerly known as British Bechuanaland. Immediately after independence in 1966, three of the worlds richest diamond bearing formations were discovered in the country. This has enabled Botswana to develop the stable and peaceful economy it enjoys today. Botswana is dominated by the Kalahari Desert in the south and west, gently rolling tablelands and fantastic rock formations in the north east, and the huge inland delta of the Okavango in the north west. Due to its relatively small population, Botswana is a land of wide open spaces and has an enviable stock of game. In the past only wealthier travellers could afford to see these freely roaming animals, as the government operated a low volume, high income tourism policy. Things are beginning to change, however, and it is possible today for the budget traveller to share in Botswana's glories. The best way to travel is through organised tours, as road journeys can be tedious and dusty, with few towns en route to provide facilities for tourists. Some road conditions, particularly in the salt pans, can be dangerous for the inexperienced.
